INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – A 16-year-old was shot and hospitalized Dec. 21, law enforcement and rescue authorities said Monday.
The wounded person was not identified but fire rescue officials said he was shot once and transported by ambulance to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce.
Indian River County Fire Rescue paramedics were called to the 1100 block of 12th Court Southwest around 2:15 p.m. Dec. 21, said Assistant Fire Chief Bill Herrington.
Indian River County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. Kevin Jaworski said the teen was considered to be stable as of Saturday night.
“Detectives and crime scene units are actively investigating the incident and have several persons of interest in custody,” he said. “It is too early to determine what led up to the shooting, but this appears to be an isolated incident.”
Jaworski stated there were “multiple calls reporting gunshots in the area” Saturday and when deputies arrived they found the person with a gunshot wound to the abdominal area.
According to a redacted version of a Indian River County Sheriff’s Office report, deputies were called around 2:12 p.m. about “a shooting that had just occurred.”
Details in the report indicate multiple people at the scene who fled after the shooting or as deputies arrived.
Some “were detained and placed into the back of the patrol car” and others reportedly “turn(ed) themselves in after they fled…”
According to the report, a fight was said to be underway near residences in the area when someone took out a handgun and fired the shot or shots.
