1 to 3 inches of snow expected in Chicago area Thursday afternoon, with more after midnight

National Weather Service officials are expecting a clipper system moving into the upper Midwest to bring at least one to three inches of snow Thursday afternoon in the Great Lakes region.

Officials said there is a 40 percent chance of snow in portions of north central and northeast Illinois, and northwest Indiana.

A period of snow is expected Thursday afternoon into the evening, mainly north of Interstate 80 where up to an inch of accumulation was possible near the Wisconsin border, officials said. Additional snow showers are likely to develop late Thursday night, officials said.

A clipper system dropping easterly through the Northern plains into the Great Lakes is expected to bring heavy snow along a path from Minnesota through northern Wisconsin, officials said.

Snow mixed with rain expected to change into snow with a high of 31 degrees. Thursday night there is a 90 percent chance of snow with between 1 to 2 inches possible, officials said.

More snow showers are expected Friday before noon, officials said.

Current conditions at O’Hare International Airport are overcast at 28 degrees. Farther southwest at Midway Airport conditions are similar at 30 degrees.
