I grew up in the same house in Maryland between the ages of 5 and 18. When I think of my childhood, my memories have a yellow aura to them — a warm, innocent happiness that stirs a deep sense of nostalgia.
As is true for everyone, where I was raised is foundational to who I am. I had my house number, 44, tattooed on my forearm as my first ink, a permanent reminder of both the physical home where I grew up and the intangible qualities it has always symbolized for me — the unconditional love and support of family, the freedom to explore, the boundlessness of child-like curiosity and passion, the peace and beauty of nature, and the strength and resilience that comes from returning to one’s true roots.
As I continue to grow, the tattoo has served as a reminder that what makes a “home” isn’t defined by a zip code, but by a feeling — a sense of ease, authenticity and belonging.
