8-year-old Akron boy accidentally shoots himself, dies Monday

An 8-year-old Akron boy died by accidental gunfire Monday in Firestone Park, according to the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Thy boy reportedly accidentally shot himself in the torso at a home in the 1500 block Evergreen Avenue around 4:15 p.m., according to Akron police. The boy’s mother was home at the time, and called 911 to alert officers of what investigators believe to be an unintentional shooting.

The boy gained access to an unsecured handgun and shot himself on the second floor of the home, police reported.

The child was taken to Akron Children’s Hospital where he later died.

Police say the handgun was recovered at the scene and that the investigation is ongoing.

Akron Public Schools board member Carla Jackson said during Monday night’s meeting that the 8-year-old was a student at Crouse Elementary School.
