Appleton area expecting heavier snow in the afternoon during Thursday’s winter storm

APPLETON — Appleton is expected to see 5-7 inches of snow from Thursday morning until Friday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service Green Bay. The heavier snow is expected to begin Thursday afternoon, and will continue into the overnight hours before the snow starts to push out at 7 a.m. Friday.

Appleton has an 10% chance of getting over 8 inches of snow. Around 9:45 a.m., snow began moving into the Fox Valley.

How will commutes be impacted by the snow?

Roads will be covered in snow, which will impact the afternoon commute Thursday, and likely Friday morning as well.

The snow is expected to stick on the ground for the next week, according to Gus Kaiser, meteorologist for the National Weather Service Green Bay. Kaiser advises drivers to take things slow when driving under these hazardous conditions, and give other people plenty of room while on the road.

Where can I check road conditions?

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation maintains an interactive map detailing winter road conditions for major highways and interstates: 511wi.gov.

The department on Tuesday announced new winter road condition categories for the map, to more clearly convey conditions to drivers. The new conditions are: normal, marked in green; partially covered, in blue; completely covered, in pink; travel not advised, in black; and no report, in grey.

The map also flags active crashes and offers views through traffic cameras on some roads — most notably, Interstate 41 and U.S. 10/State 441 in the Fox Cities.

What is the temperature forecast?

Temperatures will stay in the high 20s on Thursday before dropping below 10 by Friday evening. Here is the National Weather Service forecast:

  • Thursday: High of 30, low of 24.

  • Friday: High of 28, low of 8.
