Jan. 3—CUMBERLAND — Allegany County commissioners will choose the next school board member.
The Allegany County Board of Education has a vacant seat due to the death of its president, Robert Farrell.
Farrell died suddenly at his home Dec. 3.
Allegany County Public Relations and Communications Manager Kati Kenney said until 2020, the governor appointed individuals to fill school board vacancies.
“The Legislature amended the law,” she said Thursday. “Now, vacancies are filled by the board of county commissioners, unless the vacancy occurs more than 10 days prior to the filing deadline for the primary election in the second year of the term of the board member.”
Farrell’s recent term started in January 2023 and expires January 2027, Kenney said.
“He essentially completed the second year of his term and is entering his third,” she said. “The next election for his seat is 2026.”
A form on the county’s website is available for applicants to supply information that includes their name, address, phone number, length of residency in the county, relevant experience and reason to serve on the board.
“While not required, applicants may also upload letters of recommendation to support their nomination,” the form states.
In addition to the online form, applications will be accepted through Jan. 13 and may be delivered to the Allegany County Office Complex, 701 Kelly Road.
November’s BOE election featured two open seats on the five-member board with four candidates.
BOE Vice President Crystal Bender and newcomer Max Green placed first and second, respectively.
Member Tammy Fraley, who was first elected to the board in 2016 and reelected in 2020, came in third place.
According to the ACPS website, Fraley is a member of the Maryland Association of Boards of Education and served as the organization’s president in 2020.
Farrell was elected to the school board in November 2017 and subsequently served consecutive terms.
“Bob enjoyed spending time at his farm, hunting, fishing and … with his friends and family, his obituary stated.
“Memorial contributions are requested to be directed to the Allegany County Farm Bureau, C/O TR Robinette at 25400 Robinette Farm Lane NE, Flintstone, MD 21530,” it stated.
