Warmer weather will continue to move into New Mexico through Friday. Then a winter storm will bring snow and Arctic air back into the state starting Saturday.
More sunshine has helped to bring warmer weather back into New Mexico Wednesday with high temperatures a degree to several degrees warmer than yesterday. Sunny, dry, and calm weather will return again Thursday afternoon as high temperatures climb back to around average again for this time of year.
A weak weather disturbance will move through western and southern New Mexico late Thursday night through early Friday morning. This could bring a few spotty rain and snow showers through the mid morning before drier weather returns. Westerly winds will pick up Friday afternoon with wind gusts anywhere from 25 to 50 mph. The wind will also bring the warmest weather of the week.
Arctic air will start moving into New Mexico from the north by Saturday afternoon. Temperatures will be dropping quickly from north to south by Sunday morning. Snow will also move in with this cold air. Snow will fall Saturday in southern Colorado and along and east of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, potentially as far south as the Sacramentos. A second surge of Arctic air will move into the state Sunday into Monday. This may bring another round of snowfall to northern and northeastern New Mexico, with snow chances moving into central, western, and southeastern New Mexico on Monday. Temperatures will be much colder Monday afternoon, with even colder high temperatures on Tuesday that won’t climb above freezing for many areas. Bitterly cold wind chills in the single digits and below-zero will also develop in the overnight and morning hours on Monday and Tuesday. Travel impacts will be likely from the snow in northeastern New Mexico at the minimum, especially along I-25 from Las Vegas to Raton.
