Are national parks open or closed on the Jan. 9 national day of mourning? What to know

To honor former President Jimmy Carter, who died on Dec. 29 at the age of 100, President Joe Biden declared Jan. 9 as a national day of mourning, coinciding with the late president’s official state funeral at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.

Funeral services for Carter commenced Saturday morning in Carter’s home state of Georgia. Carter’s remains arrived at the U.S. Capitol for the final time on Tuesday afternoon for a service with members of Congress before the 39th president lies in state.

As part of the national day of mourning declaration, Biden ordered flags to be flown at half-staff for a period of 30 days following Carter’s death. The president also called on the American people to assemble on Jan. 9 “in their respective places of worship” to pay homage to Carter.

“I invite the people of the world who share our grief to join us in this solemn observance,” Biden had said in a statement following Carter’s death.

Will National Parks be closed on Jan. 9?

National parks are expected to be open on Thursday, Jan. 9. However, administrative offices will be closed for the national day of mourning.

“National parks and visitor services will generally be open and available on January 9, 2025, but administrative offices will be closed,” NPS says in an advisory on their website.

The parks service advises visitors to check individual park websites prior to their visit for the latest updates.
