Friday’s snow in Atlanta was proof that no one loves the weather more than our meteorologists.
With a work-from-home snow day to avoid the nasty roads and crawling traffic, they all took some time to play outside. And since some of our Atlanta crew starts work at 4 a.m., they were among the first to see the city’s snowfall.
They shared their photos and comments in our staff chat, and now we’re sharing them with you.
At 5:01 a.m., from graphics meteorologist Briana Waxman:
“I’m trying to focus but SNOW!”
Later …
Two young children walk in the snow.
“My almost-5-year old hasn’t seen snow in two years and doesn’t remember it, and this was my almost-2-year old’s first snow! Seeing the storm through their eyes was magical and playing outside with them is a core memory I will always treasure. Also, watching the changeover from sleet to snow, then back to sleet and freezing rain in my own yard reminded me why I love meteorology so much. Nature is amazing.”
From senior meteorologist Chris Dolce:
“Having the first decent snow in about six years makes for an extremely distracting work environment …
My 3-year-old dog woke up to use the bathroom, was like ‘what is this white stuff, let me sniff it, and sniff some more, and more, and more’ …
Just broke out the skis for a run down the hill on my lunch break.”

From digital meteorologist Caitlin Kaiser:
“I tried to be patient and let my roommate sleep in on her snow day, but the meteorologist in me got too excited and woke her up early to go play in the snow.”
From digital meteorologist Jonathan Belles:
“Snowfall with multiple inches in Atlanta is very exciting and something I will always get outside into. I love seeing the rare precip type myself, but I really love seeing adults, kids and pets playing in snow. Many are seeing it for the first time. Of course, living in Florida for more than a dozen years heightened my appetite for wintry precip, too.”
From lead meteorologist Linda Lam:
“We were all kids today for a rare snow day in Georgia! My son said ‘This is so much snow!’ and I laughed that it was only an inch and he needed to grow up in Massachusetts where myself and my husband did. My daughter said ‘I’m really glad we got snow, I love it!'”

From digital meteorologist Sara Tonks and her weather buddy:
“Brody was extremely happy to see some good snow. We used to live in Pennsylvania, and he loved frolicking in fresh snow, so he’s been waiting for this since we moved back south! All of the dog owners in our apartment complex came out to a field in the area this morning and just let the dogs run and play – a lot of them had never seen snow before, so Brody made sure to show them what’s up.”
