FLEMINGTON – A boil water advisory is in effect for all residents and businesses in Flemington following a water main break at Main and Church streets.
The state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) says the advisory will remain in effect until further notice.
The advisory also affects Raritan Township customers who receive their water from the Flemington system. It does not affect New Jersey American Water customers.
The water main ruptured on Tuesday during the Main Street sewer, water, and road improvement project. which began earlier this month and is expected to last five months.
According to the DEP, the water main damage may have caused a drop in pressure, potentially allowing contaminants to enter the water system. The state is conducting testing to make sure the water is safe.
The DEP advises customers of the borough’s water system to boil water for at least one minute and let it cool before using it for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth and washing fruits and vegetables.
The DEP also advises customers to use bottled water as an alternative where possible and discard any ice made after the water main damage occurred.
Restaurants and other food establishments are advised to only sell pre-packaged goods unless they can show health officials that they are following the DEP guidelines.
The DEP and the borough, as of 3:45 p.m. Wednesday have not announced when the boil water advisory will be lifted.
