The fallout from the Southern California wildfires has one Boston-based nonprofit expediting the services it offers to families affected by a parent who lost their life to breast cancer or was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, which has no cure.
Runway For Recovery recently put an emergency grant cycle Donate to The Runway Show, SoCal process in place for affected families and patients in Los Angeles and Orange County, California. According to Founder Olivia Boger, they expanded their reach three years ago to that area.
“Anybody who lives with metastatic breast cancer is in a constant state of fight or flight, so what’s happening in California is so triggering for people who already live every day with this sense of loss,” explained Boger.
That’s why they’re trying to get money into families’ hands right away, and they are turning around grants in a matter of hours.
The grant dollars, which range between $1,000 and $5,000, will help families afford the simplest items like groceries. In some cases, families with young children are applying, so the money will go toward diapers, formula, and bottles.
Boger said, “You can’t put a time frame on how long this fire is going to impact families. And what they have experienced, we will be seeing in applications for years to come.”
For families living in New England, New York, and New Jersey, the next grant cycle will open on March 1st.
Over the last 18 years, Runway for Recovery has offered financial, psychological, and social services to families in New England. They’ve hosted runway fashion shows to raise money for the wide-ranging support it offers.
Despite the wildfires, they will still have their upcoming runway show scheduled for Southern California on January 25th at Balboa Bay Resort in Newport Beach.
Their next event in Boston called Rally for Runway will be held on February 2nd at Barry’s Boston Back Bay.
