Buttonwood Nature Center to host StoryWalk event in February

Buttonwood Nature Center is set to launch a new seasonal StoryWalk schedule, starting with an event on Sunday, Feb. 9.

The StoryWalk, hosted by Buttonwood Nature Center, will take place from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at Pine Hill Recreation Area, 12684 Mentzer Gap Road, Waynesboro, according to a news release.

The event is designed for families, particularly those with preschool and elementary-aged children.

Participants will walk along a story trail, reading a book together and engaging in activities along the way.

The featured book for February is “Hibernation Station” by Michelle Meadows, illustrated by Kurt Cyrus.

“This delightful book teaches children about the many animals that hibernate during the winter season,” said Mary Claire King, Buttonwood’s watershed science coordinator and the event organizer, in the release. “Kids enjoy the rhyming text and beautiful illustrations, too.”

Families toast marshmallows for s’mores during a past winter StoryWalk. The next story trail event is on Sunday, Feb. 9, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at Pine Hill Recreation Area.

After the walk, attendees can gather around a campfire to enjoy s’mores and hot chocolate, according to the news release.

The event is free and does not require advance registration.

Buttonwood plans to host a StoryWalk event for each of the four seasons in 2025.

The StoryWalk trail at Pine Hill was a project by the Institute and Buttonwood Nature Center, funded in part by WellSpan Summit Endowment, Marge Kiersz and Rouzerville Business Association, with support from Washington Township, Hopewell Manufacturing, Waynesboro Area School District “Be the Village,” and Alexander Hamilton Memorial Free Library.

The StoryWalk Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vt., in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. StoryWalk is a registered service mark owned by Ferguson.

Buttonwood’s StoryWalk events are supported by lead sponsor Julia S. Dawson, with additional support from Kathy Helfrick and Today’s Horizon Fund contributors, including The Nora Roberts Foundation, Marge Kiersz, APX Enclosures, Don Gibe and Nancy Erlanson, and the family of the late Carolyn Terry Eddy.

Facility support is provided by Washington Township.

The StoryWalk is an opportunity for families to enjoy the outdoors while engaging in literacy and learning activities.

The event is part of Buttonwood’s ongoing efforts to provide educational and recreational opportunities for the community.
