Capitol Police arrest man after attack on South Carolina U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace

An Illinois man was arrested Tuesday night accused of attacking South Carolina U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace.

Mace, a Republican who represents the 1st Congressional District, posted on X (formerly Twitter) that she was assaulted by someone earlier that day.

“I was physically accosted tonight on Capitol grounds over my fight to protect women,” Mace said in the social media post. “Capitol police have arrested him. All the violence and threats keep proving our point. Women deserve to be safe.”

“Your threats will not stop my fight for women!”

In another post, Mace said she would need ice and a brace for her wrist.

According to the U.S. Capitol Police Public Information Office, just before 6 p.m., Mace’s office reported the incident in the Rayburn House Office Building. Officers arrested James McIntyre, 33, of Illinois. McIntyre was charged with a misdemeanor of assaulting a government official.

McIntyre went through security screenings before entering the U.S. Congressional buildings. According to the USCP, the Rayburn House Office Building was open to the public at the time of the incident.

House division officers tracked down McIntyre after the incident and interrogated him before he was apprehended, according to police.

Mace’s office has not responded to a Greenville News request for comment.
