Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and while all federal offices will be closed, including the state Motor Vehicle Commission and post office (except for priority mail), there will be a number of scheduled events to mark the day.
The following events are scheduled in honor of the civil rights leader.
Bergen County Martin Luther King Jr. Day events
Englewood: Volunteers will pack weekend snack packs for school-age children at the Center for Food Action Snack Pack Event, noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, at the Community Baptist Church of Englewood, 224 First St. Advanced $60 ticket registration is required via secure.qgiv.com.
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Breakfast will be held at St. Paul Baptist Church in Montclair from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 18.
Garfield, Ramsey: Jersey Cares coat sorting from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Volunteers ages 14 and older will be needed. Sorting will be done outside so dress warmly, bring your own work gloves, wear closed-toed shoes and comfortable clothes. Volunteers should be able to stand for the duration of the activity. Hackensack: MLK Day Celebration, 1 p.m. Monday by Fellowship of Black Churches at New Hope Baptist Church, 214 Berdan Place. Garden State Choral Chapter and guest preacher Rev. Dr. Allison Henderson-Brooks.
Paramus: Inaugural Ceremony Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Legacy, 3 p.m. on Tuesday at Bergen Community College Ciccone Theater, 400 Paramus Road. Music by the Garden State Choral Chapter, keynote speaker Assemblyman Benjie Wimberly. Refreshments will be served.
Saxaphonist Don Braden will be guest speaker at Ridgewood Library showing of documentary on Quincy Jones 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17.

“Quincy” screening: 6:30 to 9 p.m. p.m. Friday at the Ridgewood Library, 126 N. Maple Ave. Documentary on musician and producer Quincy Jones, followed at 8:30 p.m. by speaker, saxophonist, flutist, composer and Harvard professor Don Braden.

Ever Thankful Panry Drop Off: 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday at the Ridgecrest Senior Housing, 7 to 11 Ridge Road, outside the main entrance by the circle with the flagpole. Most needed items include bottled water, toilet paper, tissues, peanut butter and jelly, cereal, shelf-stable milk, canned chickpeas and black beans, canned tuna and chicken.

Youth will present “Letters from a Birmingham Jail” directed by Dr. Ardie Walser. “Fireside chat” with Randall Pinkston, a former correspondent with CBS News and Al Jazeera America. Assemblyman Benjie E. Wimberly will be keynote speaker at Bergen Community College’s Inaurgural Ceremony honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, at their Ciccone Theater.
