CHELCO announces a new way to help the local community after a $1.9M bequeathment from the late Muriel “Midge” Drebing.
DEFUNIAK SPRINGS — The Choctawhatchee Electric Cooperative, Inc. (CHELCO) has established the “Drebing Fund” following a $1.9 million bequest from the late Mrs. Muriel “Midge” Drebing, a former cooperative member.
Drebing, who died in October 2021, left instructions for the funds to benefit the community, focusing on education and community programs. Her attorneys informed CHELCO of the endowment, which the cooperative’s board of trustees subsequently approved.
After approval, CHELCO invested the trust’s money to generate interest, dividends and capital gains. Those gains and earnings were earmarked for community programs, and the invested gains ensured the gift’s longevity.
In the summer of 2024, CHELCO partnered with United Way Emerald Coast (UWEC) to distribute funds to local charitable organizations. All 2024 recipients underwent UWEC’s partner agency certification process, which assesses transparency, financial health and governance.
The fund allocated $67,500 to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations within CHELCO’s service area. An additional $22,500 was directed to agencies providing utility payment assistance for CHELCO members.
In a news release, CHELCO CEO Steve Rhodes reflected on Drebing’s contribution.
“Mrs. Drebing’s vision will allow us to extend support to members and programs that will create meaningful, lasting benefits,” said Rhodes. “Her generosity speaks to the very heart of cooperative values – strengthening our communities and supporting one another. We are committed to honoring her legacy with responsibility and care.”
