Jan. 5—As temperatures start to drop in preparation for this week’s polar vortex, local churches and organizations are opening their doors in anticipation of the artic air. Temperatures are expected to drop into the 20s and 30s across Texas next week, northern parts of the state dropping down into the teens.
The following locations will be open throughout the week:
* Corsicana Freedom Life Church (1803 W. Seventh Ave.) — 10 p.m. to 8 a.m., Sunday through Friday
* Salvation Army of Corsicana (212 E. First Ave.) — 8 a.m to 3 p.m., Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to noon, Friday (While Social Service Office is open)
* First Baptist Church Corsicana (510 W. Collin St.) — 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday. The church’s Good News Café will be serving lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. No other meals will be served.
Additionally, Grace Community Church (227 N Beaton St.), is collecting heaters, propane tanks, and blankets to distribute through Compassion Corsicana (111 E. First Ave.).
The Corsicana Animal Shelter is currently requesting donations of straw for their animals. As of Sunday, they still have 11 dogs in outside kennels that currently need temporary fosters. Animal control will be doing community outreach throughout the week to ensure everyone’s animals are properly prepared for the winter.
Resident Gary Dowd (1208 Bowie Dr.) is accepting donations of blankets and food for people who stay in the outdoor elements. He is also preparing hot soup to feed these locals as he delivers the donated items.
