This local chef is in the running to be crowned America’s “Greatest Baker” in a contest hosted by the Goliath of pastries – yes, the “Cake Boss” Buddy Valastro.
Cincinnati native Haley Stewart, pastry chef at the Moerlein Lager House and Roebling Event Center, has advanced to the quarterfinals of Valastro’s “The Greatest Baker” 2024 competition. Each year, the prestigious national contest crowns the top baker solely through a public vote. The winner earns a $20,000 cash prize, a feature in Bake From Scratch magazine and a trip to New York City for a baking lesson with Valastro, the legendary “Cake Boss.”
Proceeds from the contest are going toward the Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation, which provides financial assistance to children battling cancer and their families. Valastro’s “Greatest Baker” campaign has raised more than $2 million supporting over 3,200 families nationwide since its inception.
Stewart is among the top contenders remaining in the quarterfinals, with the public vote running through Thursday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. to select the semifinalists.

“I’m thrilled to represent Cincinnati on a national stage and am so grateful for the support of my friends, family, and the Moerlein Lager House team,” Stewart said in a news release. “The competition is fierce, and I need every vote to make it to the next round!”
A 2015 graduate of the Midwest Culinary Institute, Stewart has been immersed in Cincinnati’s culinary scene for years, having recently earned “Best Donut” in Cincinnati Magazine’s 2024 Bake-Off. She developed her skills at Cincinnati’s 4Entertainment Group and Prime Cincinnati before stepping up as Moerlein Lager House’s pastry and catering chef in October 2023.
