Someone allegedly threw cinderblocks at cars driving south on Interstate 5 earlier this month, causing damage to at least one vehicle, according to Washington State Patrol spokesperson John Dattilo.

Troopers received two separate calls about someone throwing objects off the Yakima overpass at about noon on Jan. 9, Dattilo said.

One of those calls came from a person who said their car was damaged by the falling objects, which the person described as cinderblocks, according to Dattilo. That person’s car was towed, but no injuries were reported.

Troopers didn’t locate a suspect. State Patrol also reached out to Tacoma Police Department for assistance, Dattilo said.

Recently, troopers have received calls about objects in the same stretch of roadway but can’t confirm that the incidents are linked, he said. The exact dates and times of those calls weren’t immediately available, but Dattilo said one involved seeing cinderblocks on the road near Portland Avenue, and another involved seeing a suitcase on the road closer to state Route 16.

Asked if there’s an active threat, Dattilo said that’s not really the message of State Patrol at this time, and that it’s not uncommon to see debris in the roadway in the Tacoma area. State Patrol encourages people to be vigilant and look for objects coming from any direction while driving, he told The News Tribune.
