Cleveland County jail reports first death 10 days into 2025

Cleveland County reported the death of a jail detainee Friday.

It was the facility’s first death of 2025.

Jacob Shane Dieball, 27, died on Friday morning, according to a news release from Cleveland County officials.

Dieball is the sixth detainee to die at the jail in the last year after five deaths were reported in 2024.

According to the news release, Dieball was lying on his bunk, breathing and moving his head and hands at about 9:21 a.m. during in-person sight checks. About 15 minutes later, detention staff were alerted for a welfare check for Dieball. He was found unresponsive but breathing. He was administered Narcan and Turn Key staff began life saving measures.

Paramedics were called at 9:53 a.m. and arrived at 10:02 a.m., but Dieball was pronounced him dead three minutes later. His cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner’s office, along with an investigation from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

Dieball was arrested by Norman police in October. He was charged in Cleveland County with firearm possession after a felony conviction, obstructing an officer, possession of a controlled dangerous substance and possession of paraphernalia.

The county hired a consultant in August to investigate deaths at the facility and the jail’s health care provider, Turn Key Health, according to The Frontier. An insurance company in March said it would not renew the county’s policy, according to The Frontier. Cleveland County commissioner Rod Cleveland told the online news outlet he believed the deaths at the jail were partially to blame for the county losing its coverage.

The Board of Commissioners said in a news release, via its Director of Communications Storme Jones, they were saddened by Dieball’s death and recognized that “while acknowledging that detainee populations face higher risks than the general population, the Board considers any loss of life unacceptable.”
