A cold front will bring another drop in temperatures Thursday, along with light snow in parts of New Mexico. A warmup quickly starts again Friday ahead of a winter storm early next week.
It was another very cold morning across New Mexico Wednesday, but for most areas it was actually slightly warmer than yesterday. Warmer weather moved in this afternoon with high temperatures closer to average for the end of January, but it has been coming with a breezy northwesterly wind. Wind gusts have been up to around 35 mph from southwest Colorado to Farmington and Albuquerque. Winds will die down tonight, but a backdoor cold front will move through the state. This will bring very cold temperatures again Thursday morning, with wind chills in the single digits above and below zero. Light snow will also fall along the Sangre de Cristo Mountains down to Clines Corners and into parts of northeast New Mexico behind the backdoor front. A dusting up to 1″ of snow will be possible.
High temperatures will be kept 10° to 15° cooler Thursday afternoon behind the backdoor front. A few snow flurries may stick around into the afternoon from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to Las Vegas and potentially as far south as the Sacramento Mountains. After another cold night Thursday, temperatures quickly warm up Friday afternoon, climbing back up to around average again. This mild air will stick around through the weekend.
There’s more uncertainty in our weather though starting this weekend with our next winter storm system that will start moving towards New Mexico. Rain and snow will move into northern and western New Mexico by Sunday. The storm will move through New Mexico early next week, bringing a better chance for more widespread lower elevation rain and mountain snow. Travel impacts don’t look widespread right now, but the highest chance for snowfall accumulation will be in the mountains where snow packed roads are likely.
