Columbus man charged with fatally shooting woman in domestic violence incident

A Columbus man is facing a murder charge in connection with the fatal shooting of a woman Tuesday morning at an apartment in the University District.

Gage Smith, 28, is accused of killing 32-year-old Autumn Ward in what police say was a domestic violence incident.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed by city homicide detectives, Smith called Columbus police just before 7 a.m. and requested officers be sent to an apartment complex in the 100 block of Chittenden Avenue. Once responding officers made contact with Smith, detectives say that he admitted to shooting and killing Ward, whom he identified as his girlfriend.

Police officers entered the apartment and found Ward suffering from a gunshot wound to the head, detectives said in the complaint.

Columbus Division of Fire medics pronounced Ward dead at the scene at 7:49 a.m., police said.

Smith is currently in custody at the Franklin County jail. His arraignment is scheduled for Wednesday morning at 9 a.m., court records show.
