Cool down, high winds slated for Arizona as winter weather descends on nation

It’ll be chilly again later this week in Arizona ― even in metro Phoenix!

Tuesday temperatures in Phoenix will peak at around 69 degrees, which is a little high for this time of year. We’ll see an increased chance for showers, around 20%, through Tuesday night and into Wednesday.

Tuesday and Wednesday will be cloudy and windy with wind speeds forecast as high as 25 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

Strong gusts across the region Wednesday could even reach in excess of 40 mph, particularly across the high terrain east of Phoenix and areas along and west of the Lower Colorado River Valley, according to a Weather Service forecast. “Given the magnitude of the winds forecast and dry conditions in place, blowing dust will be possible in dust prone areas, which can reduce visibilities and make travel hazardous,” the forecast stated.

According to the weather service, Tuesday night’s low temperature of 52 degrees will be the highest for the rest of the week. Expect overnight lows to dip into the high 30s starting on Wednesday and continue to trend down through Sunday night, when it could drop to 36 degrees.

Sunny skies will return by Thursday morning, though, and the wind is expected to be calm into the weekend, the Weather Service reported.

When will snow fall in Northern Arizona?

Although this cooldown in central Arizona is nothing compared to the intense winter storms our friends in the midwest are experiencing, snow will return in the High Country this week.

The Weather Service predicted a 50% chance of snow showers in Flagstaff on Tuesday morning, mainly after 11 a.m. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches is possible, and temperatures will be between 34 and 20 degrees. It’ll likely snow again between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. Tuesday night.

The clouds will mostly clear up on Wednesday and less than a half of an inch of snow could fall before 11 a.m. Even though the sun will be back out, wind gusts as high as 31 mph are possible and the Wednesday night low could drop to just 12 degrees.

Sunny, clear and windy conditions will continue into Sunday, with only a short break from the strong winds on Friday night. High temperatures will peak near 46 degrees and lows will stay in the teens through the week.
