A man who was allegedly found with multiple types of drugs following a traffic stop in Norwich on Monday tried taking off from state police before troopers were able to pull him out of the SUV and arrest him.
The traffic stop occurred shortly after 2:30 a.m. when a trooper patrolling Taftville Occum Road off of Interstate 395 allegedly saw the driver of a GMC Sierra fail to properly stop at a stop sign and encroach the crosswalk at the intersection of Bridge Street before coming to a halt, according to Connecticut State Police.
The trooper pulled the driver over on Bridge Street before identifying him as 43-year-old Andylee Jones of Norwich, state police said. During the stop, state police said the trooper allegedly saw “signs of criminal activity” that were “consistent with illegal narcotics.” State police also noted that Jones was known to troopers with Troop E in Montville from previous encounters.
The trooper had Jones get out of the vehicle while a K-9 Unit responded to the scene. When the dog alerted police to the exterior of the vehicle, Jones reportedly ran to the SUV, got into the driver seat and shut the door before attempting to take off, according to state police. Troopers were able to remove him from the SUV and handcuff him before he could get the vehicle into drive.
A search of the SUV reportedly turned up about 426 grams of suspected crack cocaine, 8.5 grams of suspected fentanyl, various prescription pills, a digital scale and $280, according to state police.
Jones was charged with two counts each of possession of narcotics with intent to sell and possession of a controlled substance and a single count each of use of drug paraphernalia and interfering with an officer/resisting.
He was held on a $300,000 bond and was expected to be arraigned Monday in Norwich Superior Court.
