Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad train derails Saturday during North Pole Adventure run

The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad’s final run Saturday night of its North Pole Adventure excursion was cut short after the train derailed in northern Summit County.

CVSR spokesperson Lynee Bixler said the train derailed around 8:53 p.m. just north of Peninsula.

There were no reports of injuries among the hundreds of passengers on board or among the crew members.

Buses were dispatched to pick up the stranded passengers and volunteers.

This was the last sold-out run of the season for the scenic railroad before its scheduled winter break.

The North Pole Adventure is a family-friendly excursion that departed from the scenic railroad’s Independence Station earlier in the evening for a trek through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park to the North Pole in Peninsula where costumed characters and Santa would greet the passengers before heading back to Cuyahoga County.

The excursion was making its way back from Peninsula when the mishap happened.

“Safety remains our top priority, and the incident is under investigation,” Bixler said. “We deeply regret any inconvenience this incident may have caused.”
