Deadline to register to vote in Welch excess levy election is Jan. 13

Jan. 11—WELCH — Welch voters will decide in early February whether an excess levy which has been in effect for over 50 years will be continued so it can help fund the public library and fund tasks around the city.

The city of Welch will be conducting its Excess Levy Election on Saturday, Feb. 1. Polls will open at 6:30 a.m. that day and close at 7:30 p.m. The polling place for all wards will be at Welch City Hall.

Resident who want to vote on the excess levy need to be registered to vote by Monday, Jan. 13 at the McDowell County Clerk’s Office in the McDowell County Courthouse. People can also register to vote online at www.wvsos.gov/elections.

People who moved recently are being asked to change the address on their voter’s registration. As of Jan. 1, 2018, West Virginia Law requires voters to show a form of identification to vote in person during the early voting period.

The issue of the excess levy is to submit to the voters of the city the question of providing additional revenues to make annual payments toward the support and maintenance of the public library, annual payments for the operation of parks and recreational facilities, make annual payments for the maintenance and operation of the street light system and to contribute to the annual cost of re-building, improving, and repairing streets, alleys and improving thoroughfares within the city, officials said. The excess levy has continued to be in effect for over 50 years.

Early voting in person will be conducted Friday, Jan. 17 to Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2025 at Welch City Hall and the hours will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday throughFriday.

City hall will be open Saturday, Jan. 18 and Saturday, Jan. 25 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. for early voting.

The last day for the city of Welch to receive an absentee ballot application is Monday, Jan. 27.
