Deadly crashes across Nevada rise nearly 6% in 2024: report

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Data released by Nevada State police showed an increase in deadly crashes across the state as more than 400 people were killed on Nevada roads in 2024.

It’s a common trend across the valley as more and more families are suffering after losing loved ones to roadway fatalities. Beronica Ramos, just lost her baby brother last summer in a DUI crash.

The driver, 37-year-old, Martin Andino was driving the wrong way near Boulder City when he killed not only Ramos’ brother, Antonio Aguilera, but his girlfriend too.

“My brother was coming back from Utah from a vacation and doing everything he was supposed to do and unfortunately because Andino decided to drink and drive that day, two in the afternoon, he hit them head on and now my brother and his girlfriend are not here,” Ramos shared with 8 News Now.

Andino was sentenced to 35 years in prison on 10 different counts including reckless driving and driving under the influence resulting in death, records showed.

Nevada State police acknowledged the severity of the problem after releasing the state’s yearly stats that showed impairment and speeding as the top contributing factors statewide. Fatalities also went up by nearly 6%.

“Through enforcement activities like ‘Joining Forces,’ we are doing everything we can to be visible and write those speeding citations,” Major Kevin Honea with Nevada State police said.

Clark County pedestrian fatalities went up by nearly 15% with motorcyclist deaths up by 22%.

“As a rider myself, I make sure they see me and riding requires the utmost attention. Make sure to stay out of people’s blind spots and reduce your speed,” Major Honea added.
