Des Moines hunter’s body found in Lake Red Rock after report his boat was taking on water

The body of a Des Moines duck hunter whose boat began taking on water was found in Lake Red Rock on Sunday by the Marion County sheriff and a deputy.

Sheriff’s officials, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the Knoxville and Knoxville Rural fire departments had begun searching for the 37-year-old man at the request of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office around 7 p.m. Saturday, a news release from Marion County Sheriff Jason Sanderholdt said.

The news release said the man’s name was being withheld pending notification of his family.

The friend who reported the man missing to Des Moines police Saturday was not sure which body of water the man’s boat was on when it began taking on water, the release said, but Marion County deputies were able to determine the man’s car had passed a license plate reader in the county and then found it parked at a boat ramp. The release did not say how the friend learned of the man’s dilemma.

The search continued until shortly after midnight, then resumed Sunday morning, the release said. It said Sanderholdt and the deputy found the man’s body about 8:30 a.m.
