A Des Moines man was sentenced to 17 years in federal prison on Friday for distributing fentanyl that led to the death of a 1-year-old child.
Kenneth Leroy Quinn, 23, sold pills containing fentanyl in April 2023 to a customer who brought the pills home. Their 1-year-old child died of acute fentanyl toxicity after ingesting the pills, according to a release from the United States Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of Iowa.
After the child’s death, law enforcement began investigating Quinn and officers purchased marijuana from him six times, according to the release.
In November 2023, a search warrant was conducted in Quinn’s residence where four guns, more than five pounds of marijuana, almost an ounce of methamphetamine and three-quarters of an ounce of cocaine were found.
In 2022, Quinn was found guilty of possessing marijuana and was deemed ineligible to carry dangerous weapons, according to court documents.
Quinn was sentenced to 17 years in federal prison with five years of supervised release after serving his term. He was also ordered to pay $1,847 in restitution. There is no parole in the federal system.
