El Paso-area man accused in domestic violence stabbing death jailed on $1 million bond

A man accused in the stabbing death of his ex-girlfriend over the weekend has been extradited back to El Paso and booked into the El Paso County Jail in Downtown.

Jorge Albert Chavez, 30, is accused of killing Dafne Michelle Davila, 27, who was found “severely stabbed” early Sunday, Jan. 5, in a case of domestic violence at a home in the 600 block of Zinc Place in the Horizon City area, sheriff’s officials said.

Chavez is being held on a $1 million bond on a murder charge. He does not have an attorney listed on court records. A jail booking photo shows that Chavez has “Dafne” tattooed on his upper chest.

Dafne Michelle Davila, 27, who was stabbed to death allegedly by an ex-boyfriend on Sunday at a home in El Paso County, is seen in a photo on a GoFundMe page raising money for funeral expenses.

“Dafne was not only physically beautiful, but (had) an even more beautiful soul and with an even bigger heart. She was taken too soon, robbed (of) the opportunity to accomplish her goals,” stated a GoFundMe account to raise money for funeral expenses.

About 3:30 a.m. on Sunday sheriff’s deputies responded to a call regarding domestic violence occurring at a home on Zinc Place, officials said in a news release.

“This tragedy reminds us of the devastating impact domestic violence has on our community,” El Paso County Sheriff Oscar Ugarte, who last week took office, said in a statement.

“Thanks to the strong collaboration between our partnering agencies, we were able to quickly locate and apprehend the suspect,” Ugarte said. “If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, please seek help — there are resources available to provide support and safety.”

Deputies arrived to see Chavez allegedly leaving the scene in a gray 2024 Chevrolet pickup truck and inside the home Davila was found mortally wounded, officials said. She was transported to Del Sol Medical Center, where she died.

Sheriff’s deputies coordinated with the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Texas Rangers and the Reeves County Sheriff’s Office to locate Chavez, who was arrested without incident while traveling on Interstate 20.

Reeves County, whose county seat is Pecos, is about 200 miles east of El Paso. The El Paso County sheriff’s Fugitive Apprehension Unit took custody of Chavez who was extradited from Reeves County back to El Paso.

Jail records show Chavez was booked into the El Paso County Jail on Monday. He is also listed as “Albert Chavez” on a court log.

A Sheriff’s Office video released to the news media shows Chavez quietly walked into jail wearing glasses, an orange prisoner jumpsuit and handcuffed and shackled with a waist chain.

Records show that Chavez had been arrested by sheriff’s deputies on a warrant on a misdemeanor family violence charge on Nov. 11 and released from jail that same day on a $1,500 bond stemming from a case in August. The case is pending in court.
