El Paso braces for first freeze of the season as temps drop below 30 degrees

El Pasoans could wake up to below-freezing temperatures, as the area is expected to experience its first freeze of the season, according to the National Weather Service.

As a cold front moves into the region, Wednesday’s forecasted low is 27 degrees, though some lowland areas could drop into the upper teens or lower 20s.

Morning low temperatures in the teens to mid 20s will occur Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Typically, the area sees its first freeze in mid-November, according to freeze data compiled by the National Weather Service. So far, the coldest recorded temperature was 33 degrees at the El Paso International Airport on Nov. 9.

If El Paso does drop below freezing, there have been 296 days between freezes — that would be the fifth-longest stretch between the last and first freeze. The longest stretch recorded between freezes was 309 days in 2017.

While Wednesday is expected to be the coldest day of the season, temperatures are expected to bounce back above freezing on Thursday and into the weekend.

Use pipe covers; don’t forget to cover plants for winter

In anticipation of the first freeze in El Paso, the National Weather Service is encouraging El Pasoans to prepare by protecting the four P’s:

  • People: Minimize time outdoors, prepare for power outages, and check on the elderly and other vulnerable people.

  • Pets: Keep your pets warm, dry, and indoors as much as possible. Limit outside time and keep them bundled up.

  • Pipes: Insulate pipes if possible, open up sink cabinets to expose pipes to heated air, disconnect hoses and turn off water to sprinklers.

  • Plants: Know plants’ temperature thresholds, and if possible, cover them to help retain heat.
