Fillmore couple held in road rage incident

Fillmore man arrested for attempted murder in road rage incident near Moorpark

A Fillmore man was arrested Sunday after he allegedly fired multiple rounds at an occupied vehicle in an apparent road rage incident outside Moorpark, striking the vehicle’s roof with one of the rounds.

The suspect, who is in his late 40s, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office said.

Sheriff’s Capt. Nick Odenath said it appears the suspect was driving behind the victim at Grimes Canyon Road and Highway 23 when he fired at the vehicle Sunday morning.

The suspect’s wife, who was with him in his vehicle, was arrested on suspicion of being an accessory to attempted murder. Both were expected to be booked into county jail Sunday.

No injuries were reported, Odenath said.

Officers do not believe the alleged shooter and the victim knew each other, Odenath said.

Oxnard man gets almost 65 years for shooting that paralyzed girl

An Oxnard man was sentenced Friday to almost 65 years in prison after being convicted of multiple felonies in connection with a 2019 shooting into a Port Hueneme home that caused paralysis in a 7-year-old girl.

Jaylin Edwards, 28, was convicted by a jury of the attempted murder of a man who was not inside the home at the time of the shooting. He was also convicted of shooting at an inhabited dwelling and two counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm.

Edward pleaded not guilty and the case is under appeal.

Edwards is the second person held in the July 2019 shooting into the home on Pearl Street where a family of five was watching television. He and a minor fired at the house where they thought a man they were looking for lived, according to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office.

The girl was struck in the head, went into a coma for three weeks, was left paralyzed on the left side of her body and has permanent cognitive impairment, prosecutors said. Her mother was shot in the foot and thigh and required surgery but was released the following day, according to the DA’s office.

The minor was arrested in December 2019, five months after the shooting. He is now over 21 but was 17 at the time of the incident and his case is still pending in juvenile court.

Along with the felony convictions, jurors also found true a variety of special allegations. Included were use of a firearm and infliction of great bodily injury leading to paralysis or a comatose condition due to brain injury.
