Flames destroy barn amid freezing conditions in Indiana County

Flames destroyed a barn in Indiana County on Saturday.

Firefighters were called to Wilgus Road at 3 p.m. after receiving reports of a barn on fire.

Smoke was billowing out of the barn.

Members of the Commodore Volunteer Fire Department said crews faced some issues while fighting the flames because of freezing conditions. A nearby pond on Mountain View Drive was frozen over, making it so that crews could not use it to refill their tanker for some time. The Clymer Volunteer Department was able to break through the ice to resolve the problem.

Temperatures were so low that gear started to freeze.

Montgomery Township and brought workers kept salting and plowing the roads firefighters were on as the situation progressed.

Despite these conditions, firefighters were able to get the flames under control within an hour, firefighters said. They were at the scene for about 2-3 hours for overhaul.

The top part of the barn did collapse.

At least nine companies responded to the fire. Two other companies were on standby.

No injuries were reported.
