Former State Senator Albert Robinson dies at 85

The county lost a veteran of state politics last week.

Former State Senator Albert L. Robinson passed away December 2 at at the age of 85.

Sen. Robinson was born at Silver Mine Camp in Clay County to Roscoe and Vernie Robinson on December 19, 1938, and grew up in the East Bernstadt community of Laurel County.

Robinson served the Commonwealth of Kentucky for over 50 years — first as a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives from 1972 to 1985, as well as 1987 to 1989, and then as a member of the Kentucky Senate, representing District 21, from 1994 to 2005 and 2013 to 2021.

“Sen. Robinson’s life and career were nothing short of extraordinary,” wrote Andy Westberry, Communications Director of The Republican Party of Kentucky (RPK). “A selfless public servant, he dedicated nearly half a century to serving our Commonwealth, holding positions in both legislative chambers throughout his long and distinguished career.”

Laurel County Judge Executive David Westerfield was a close friend and colleague of Sen. Robinson.

“He helped Laurel County in many, many ways in the years that he was in office in Frankfort,” Westerfield stated.

Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman also spoke on Robinson’s passing, stating, “In a career of public service that covered more than 50 years, Senator Robinson was a steadfast advocate for the people of Southeastern Kentucky. Our Commonwealth is grateful for his leadership and dedication.”

Robinson’s obituary shared that he loved farming, fishing, and hunting. It also stated that he greatly loved God, his family, friends, state, and country.

“Albert’s unwavering commitment to his Christian faith and conservative principles was evident to all who knew and worked with him. Beyond his legislative and professional accomplishments, which were plentiful, Albert was a friend to many of us. His passion for his faith, family, and community will not be forgotten,” said Senate President Robert Stivers (R-Manchester).

The former senator is survived by his wife of over 62 years, Lucille; three children; six grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two brothers and numerous other relatives and friends.

Per his request, Robinson was laid to rest on last Wednesday with his closest family present.
