GBI continues probe into shooting of robbery suspect by Clarke County deputy

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is still gathering the facts of what happened on Jan. 14 when a Clarke County sheriff’s deputy shot an armed robbery suspect during a pursuit that occurred in the minutes after the robbery in Athens.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation Agent Jesse Maddox said Friday that once the paperwork is done, it will be turned over to the Western Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.

The deputy fired his gun at the suspect, identified as Javious Mattox, 25, of Athens, but Maddox said agents are still going over evidence, such as the videos, to see what happened during the shooting.

Clarke County Sheriff John Q. Williams reported that the deputy, whose name has not been released, was placed on administrative leave.

Mattox remained Friday in hospital care, where Athens-Clarke police are providing security, according to police Lt. Katie Jenkins.

The robbery occurred at the Crickett Wireless store on North Avenue about 2:30 p.m. Police are still withholding what happened during the robbery as the incident report has not been approved for release, according to Jenkins.

She could not say Friday if the two suspects took anything during the store robbery.

Following the robbery, a vehicle chase ensued which ended at the intersection of Commerce Road and Newton Bridge Road, police said. A foot chase then occurred in which the deputy is reported to have fired his gun and hit Mattox, according to the GBI.

The other suspect, Malik Kejuan Tucker, 21, of Juniper Lane, Athens, remained in the Clarke County Jail on Friday. He is charged with armed robbery, obstruction and possession of a weapon during a felony crime. No bond has been set for the armed robbery charge. Police reported the recovery of two guns at the scene.

Maddox said his office is investigating what happened in the shooting, but the armed robbery investigation is being handled by police.

The armed robbery at the Crickett Wireless store was the second armed robbery this month in Athens. On Jan. 5, a lone man who displayed a firearm, robbed a merchandise clerk at the CVS store on Oglethorpe Avenue. That robber, who was wearing a facemask, has not been identified. He stole money out of the cash register, according to the report.
