Grand jury will review evidence in West Chester Twp. self-defense fatal shooting

Dec. 9—The investigation continues into a 22-year-old man who was shot and killed by an apartment renter as he was allegedly breaking into the shooter’s West Chester Twp. apartment.

The county prosecutor says the evidence from the case will get a review by a grand jury.

West Chester Police officers responded early Sunday morning to the apartment complex at 7560 Shawnee Lane found a man shot. Preliminary investigation indicates the resident found a man inside and shot him, according to police.

Isaiah Jordan Erickson died of a gunshot wound and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the Butler County Coroner’s Office.

The resident called 911 reporting he had fired three shots at the intruder who broke into his residence thought the balcony door.

“He is in my living room. He has a gun,” the man said. He told the dispatcher he heard gunshots outside before the break-in. “He is not moving.”

A woman also called 911 reporting yelling there were about nine shots outside from the direction of a neighboring building.

The resident, who was in the home with his wife and child, is cooperating with the ongoing investigation, police said.

He told the dispatcher the did not know the intruder.

As a matter of policy, fatal self-defense shootings and officer involved shootings are presented to a grand jury, said Butler County Prosecutor Michael Gmoser.

“I have few policies, but this is one of them.,” Gmoser said. “It will go to the grand jury. It will be very instructive for the general population with respect to firearms and self defense.”
