Grant funding from community foundation helps Emmet County organizations

PETOSKEY — Several area organizations are celebrating grant funding from the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation that will help them achieve their mission goals.

Both Emmet County Recycling and Hospice of Michigan announced earlier this month that they had received grants from the community foundation.

Emmet County Recycling said its newly acquired funding will be used to expand event recycling services. The group purchased five zero waste stations, 15 blue Clearstreams for bottle and can collection and five Give All Food A Future carts for food scraps. According to Emmet County Recycling officials, these upgrades will improve recycling rates, reduce waste and increase educational outreach.

“The generous support from the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation will help to provide better recycling services at more events,” said Ashley McMurry, grants and resources coordinator for Emmet County Recycling, in a press release. “This will allow us to expand our efforts, reduce landfill waste and promote sustainability in the community.”

Hospice of Michigan said their $7,500 grant from The Marjorie A. Winnell Healing Center Fund for Complementary Medicine Fund will support its Gestures of Grace fund to enhance patients’ quality of life in their final days. The fund addresses non-medical needs not covered by insurance, through services like comfort items, utility assistance, housing necessities and emergency transportation.

“We are deeply thankful for the generosity of the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation,” said Roxanne Kiesling, director of philanthropy-grants at Hospice of Michigan, in a statement. “Their contributions from The Marjorie A. Winnell Healing Center Fund for Complementary Medicine Fund allow us to turn compassion into action. Our Gestures of Grace fund aims to provide more than care — it lets us create meaningful moments and lasting comfort for patients and families when it matters most.”

These grants are just two examples of recent funding provided by the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation.

In December, the community foundation announced that it had awarded $369,455 in grant dollars to 50 qualifying organizations, including nonprofits, educational institutions and municipalities that serve the people of Emmet County, in its 2024 fall grant cycle.

These grant funds will support a wide variety of projects and needs, from expanded educational resources for area schools to fire truck upgrades to biking and hiking trail improvements.

“The community foundation plays a pivotal role in connecting donor contributions to impactful projects and initiatives within our region,” said grant distribution committee member Carla Crockett of Petoskey in a press release. “It has been a privilege serving on the Grant Distribution Committee, where we collaborate to ensure responsible stewardship and make a meaningful difference in our community.”
