GREEN BAY – A Greenfield man was charged with attempted homicide and is accused of stabbing a 56-year-old man in early December.

What happened?
According to a criminal complaint:

Green Bay Police officers were responded to the 1400 block of Western Avenue for a reported stabbing just after midnight on Dec. 8.

The owner of the residence called the police after the victim, who is an acquaintance of her daughter, knocked on her door stating he had been stabbed at an apartment complex nearby.

The victim had a stab wound to his chest, two stab wounds on either side of his waist and two stab wounds on his back. The victim later said the wounds were a couple inches deep and he needed emergency surgery to repair muscle damage.

The victim also said Jelks stole his credit cards, Social Security number and Wisconsin ID.

The victim gave multiple different descriptions of the apartment’s location and officers were unable to determine where the incident took place.

The victim told responding officers he had been at a friend’s apartment and Jelks was there. He said he did not know Jelks well but had known of him for about three years. The victim told police he and Jelks began arguing and the victim tried to leave but Jelks wouldn’t let him. He said while trying to leave, Jelks began stabbing him. He was able to get away from Jelks and ran to a nearby house.

The victim told police the friend, who lived in the apartment, was home but left to go to the store right before the argument and stabbing occurred. The friend told police that he was in Stevens Point with two friends when the incident happened, which police confirmed. The friend said there was no blood in his apartment when he got home and it did not look like a disturbance had occurred. In searching the apartment, police did not find anything suspicious.

On Dec. 15, Milwaukee Police located a vehicle that had been reported stolen in Green Bay and arrested Jelks. While investigating the stolen car, detectives found Jelks had been in Green Bay on Dec. 6 and 7 and the stolen vehicle went missing on Dec. 8.

The victim identified Jelks as the man who stabbed him.
What’s next?
Jelks was booked into Brown County Jail on Jan. 8 and is currently being held without bail. He has yet to make his initial appearance in court.
