Construction work will close some lanes Friday night on southbound I-5 near Joint Base Lewis-McChord, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.
Lane reductions will begin at 9:30 p.m. Jan. 10 between Pendleton Avenue and Steilacoom-DuPont Road near Exit 119, WSDOT announced on the project website. All lanes will reopen the following morning by 6:30 a.m.
Depending on weather, the work could be rescheduled, according to WSDOT.
I-5 ramps to and from Steilacoom-DuPont Road/Clark Road will also be closed beginning at 8 p.m. Friday. They’ll reopen by 6:30 a.m. Saturday, according to the project website. Detour signs will lead drivers to the next nearest ramp.
A new overpass will allow crews to add HOV lanes on both north- and southbound I-5 near JBLM, between Mounts Road and Gravelly Lake Drive, to help relieve congestion on the highway. Rebuilding the Steilacoom-Dupont Road interchange with I-5 will also address structural deficiencies in the existing overpass, which was built in 1957, according to the WSDOT website. Construction at the site began in August 2023.
