Here’s where Raising Cane’s is opening its first Central Jersey restaurant

EDISON – A new fast food chicken fingers restaurant is coming to town.

The Planning Board has given approval for Raising Cane’s to build a drive-thru restaurant on the site of a bank in the parking lot of the Edison Crossroads shopping center near Petco on southbound Route 1.

The approval could make the Edison site the first Raising Cane’s in Central Jersey. Another Raising Cane’s is proposed in Watchung.

The restaurant’s website does not yet list an opening date for the Edison location. A Glassboro restaurant is scheduled to open on Thursday.

Raising Cane’s is known for its chicken fingers, crinkle-cut fries and Texas toast meals. The restaurant already has New Jersey locations in Burlington, Marlton, Cherry Hill and Deptford, but none in Central Jersey.

The chain was started in 1996 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana by Todd Graves who reconstructed an old building into the first Raising Cane’s. The business was named after Graves’ yellow Labrador, Raising Cane.

According to Forbes, Graves came up with the idea of a restaurant serving only chicken fingers in college, but a business professor gave him a low grade. When banks refused to loan him money, Graves used his savings and a Small Business Administration loan to start the business which now has an estimated worth of more than $3.5 billion.
