Donald Trump won election to a second term as president after campaigning on a promise to carry out the largest mass deportation in U.S. history. The vast majority of repatriations ― people deported from the United States or who return on their own after they are taken into custody ― take place with people arriving at the southern border. Repatriations at the border are typically carried out by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Immigrants living in the interior of the U.S also are deported, either through formal removal or voluntarily returns. Repatriations from the interior of the U.S. are typically carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and most often involve immigrants who lived and possibly worked in the U.S. for some time.
