More winter weather is coming to East Tennessee.
Freezing temperatures are forecast to continue for the region and “heavy snowfall” is expected to fall on Friday. This is part of the significant winter storm that will impact the entire Volunteer State and much of the Mid-South.
“We already have the cold air in place so there`s not much of a question about heavy snow this time around,” read the National Weather Service’s forecast discussion.
Ahead of the snowstorm, a winter storm watch is in place for all of East Tennessee through Saturday morning.
Here’s what to know about the impending weather.

Cities like Gatlinburg, Knoxville and Oneida will start to get snow in the mid-morning, from about 10 a.m. until noon. Further north, cities closer to the Virginia state line will likely see snow in the early afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.
Snow is forecast to continue falling into Friday night and into Saturday morning.
What is a ‘normal’ amount of snow for Knoxville?
Compared to the Midwest and northern states, a mere 4-6 inches of snow seems insignificant. However, for Knoxville, a half-foot of snow carries severe impacts.
That’s because the city’s average snowfall is 4.6 inches for an entire winter season, according to the National Weather Service. This storm alone would exceed that threshold.
