How to pick the right holiday tree and make it thrive

It’s that time again when many Canadians are shopping for the perfect tree. There are many to choose from. Do you prefer fir? Or, do you pine for pine?

“There are people that prefer pine. They love it, they will always have it and that’s all there is to it. There are people that prefer fir,” Vincent Broughm, tree salesman, explained to The Weather Network on a lot on Halifax, N.S.

He said the most common choice is fir because a pine is harder to decorate.

“It takes little bulbs, garland, bows and things like that, whereas a fir has got multiple branches and you can hang all kinds of little ornaments off it, and use garland also,” said Broughm.

So, it’s settled: Fir it is. You just need to find the right one now.

When you bring it home, Broughm said be sure not to place it anywhere near a heater if you want it to last.

“If you have it near a heater, it will dry right out real quick.”

He also shared another secret for longevity. If you really want to make it pop, mix in a little soda when you first start watering.

“For the start, if you want to put a little bit of [soda], something with some sugar in it, to start it and get it going, [it] loves sugar. It’s like any tree. [It] likes water and if it’s got a little sugar in it, it’s all the better for it,” said Broughm.
