Indianapolis marks 39th pedestrian death in 2024 after man struck, killed by vehicle

A man is dead after he was struck and killed by a vehicle in downtown Indianapolis Sunday.

According to a report from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the man was walking near West 10th and Illinois streets when he was struck at around 3:20 a.m.

First responders took him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He has not yet been identified.

Police say the driver stayed on the scene and cooperated with investigators. The driver will have blood drawn for a sobriety test, which is standard protocol when an automobile accident results in death or serious injury.

The crash marks the 39th pedestrian or bicyclist to be killed by a driver in Indianapolis this year, according to Indy Pedestrian Safety Crisis, an advocacy group that tracks the accidents.

The organization reported 47 deaths in 2023 and 45 deaths the year before.

While the number of pedestrian deaths is down slightly this year, the number of reported collisions has surpassed 800 for the first time in recent years. In 2024, Indy Pedestrian Safety Crisis has tracked 831 total incidents after reporting 684 in 2023 — a 21% increase.
