INDOT urges Knox County residents: ‘Stay Home’

KNOX COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Knox County saw a strong blast of snow and ice Sunday.

“The amounts are definitely lighter to the north and heavier to the south,” said Matthew Holden, the Knox County Highway Superintendent. “We haven’t had any reports of the freezing rain causing any issues yet, but I do know as it gets down towards Gibson County, freezing rain has been a problem.”

Given the conditions in the area, state officials issued a strong request to motorists.

“Stay home,” said Gary Brian, a spokesman for the Indiana Department of Transportation. “That’s what I would say, stay home. If you can’t stay home, take your time. If you think of a time to give yourself some extra time, double that. Make sure you just give yourself plenty of time to get where you need to be.”

The Knox County Highway Department says the varying snow amounts have not had much of an impact on them, but drivers need to be aware of how much snow has fallen in their area.

“Once we get two inches of snow, two inches of snow and eight inches of snow is kind of the same to us,” Holden said. “It’s definitely not to residents, because two inches of snow, they can get through it. When you get up to eight inches, it’ll cause problems with getting stuck. Drifting hasn’t been a big problem yet, and we’re hoping it’s not going to become a problem.”
