Investigation confirmed in Lima man’s death in prison

Jan. 10—CHILLICOTHE — Multiple state agencies have confirmed an investigation is underway into the April 2024 death of Lima resident Brydon Boop at Ross Correctional Institution in Chillicothe.

Following the Christmas Day death of a correction officer at the prison in Southern Ohio, members of Boop’s family contacted The Lima News about his death at the same facility under what were alleged to be suspicious circumstances.

According to a report from the Ross County Coroner’s Office obtained earlier this week, Boop died at 8:51 a.m. April 21 in the emergency department at Adena Regional Medical Center in Chillicothe. The report, dated July 1, 2024, states that Boop was found unresponsive and not breathing at the prison and was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

An autopsy was conduced by the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office. It determined Boop died as a result of multiple blunt-force injuries. The manner of death was determined to be homicide, according to the report.

He was 26 years of age at the time of his death.

A spokesperson for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction earlier this week said the Ohio State Highway Patrol is currently investigating the circumstances behind Boop’s death.

Sgt. Tyler Ross, asked to comment on the status of the investigation, replied in an email, “I can confirm the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating this incident. It is currently an open and active investigation.”

Boop was born Oct. 30, 1997 in Lima and attended Shawnee High School. In 2022, he was convicted following his guilty pleas to counts of trafficking cocaine, aggravated trafficking of drugs and trafficking heroin. He was sentenced to a minimum of 13 years in prison.

Andrew Lansing, a corrections officer at Ross Correctional Institution, was found dead at the prison on Dec. 25 following an alleged assault. Lima resident Rashawn Cannon, 27, has been identified as the principal suspect in Lansing’s death.

Cannon, who has since been transferred to another state prison site, was serving a minimum eight-year sentence on an assault charge stemming from an August 2022 incident on Prospect Avenue in Lima.
