San Angelo ranked in the top 10 on a list of Texas cities judged as Best Places to Raise a Family.
The study ranked 25 Texas cities on scores from 1 to 25 in 18 categories of health and safety, economic performance, quality education, amenities and recreation, and social environment.
Ranking first is Tyler, which is the hometown of the study conducted by the Hibbs Institute for Business & Economic Research at the University of Texas at Tyler. Wichita Falls ranked second, and Abilene was third.
One study has ranked Texas cities on attributes for raising families.
San Angelo, which ranked No. 7 overall, led the state in student per teacher ratio (1) and scored favorably in number of registered nurses (4), recreation and entertainment places (4), number of primary care physicians (5), and children in single parent households (5).
San Angelo did less well in basic needs affordability ratio (23), income inequality (22), per capita income (17), bachelor’s degree rates (16), and high school diploma rates (13).
Abilene was No. 2 on the list, ranked best for having a low number of uninsured children (1) and scoring well for its abundance of grocery stores (2), having a high number of registered nurses (3), having a low number of children in poverty (3), and a low level of income inequality (4).
Abilene fared less well on school enrollment rates (21), number of restaurants, bars and clubs (20), per capita income (19), basic needs affordability ratio (15), and bachelor’s degree rates (10).
Many of the highest-ranking cities were in north or west parts of the state while border towns were the lowest ranking.

The study used statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau and other sources to compile the findings.
