Is there an issue with Instagram, Facebook right now? Meta working to resolve app outages

Apps owned by Meta, like Facebook, Instagram and Threads were experiencing glitches this afternoon, Wednesday, Dec. 11. Error messages were being reported across the internet around 1 p.m. EST, according to DownDetector.

At its peak, the outage reports for Facebook reached more than 100,000, DownDetector shows. At 1:51 p.m., those reports dropped to a little under 27,000.

According to USA TODAY, WhatsApp Messenger, another app owned by Meta, was showing similar spikes in reports with more than 10,000 reports of outages. USA TODAY reporters also experienced these outages, with some seeing blank home screens on Instagram for more than three minutes after opening the app.

Why is my FB not working right now?

As of 2:30 p.m. EST, reports of Facebook outages on DownDetector have decreased to 22,360, down from 105,330 at around 1:06 p.m.

Meta acknowledged the outage but didn’t provide a reason.

“We’re aware that a technical issue is impacting some users’ ability to access our apps,” a 1:48 p.m. X post from Meta said. “We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and apologize for any inconvenience.”

Is there an issue with Instagram right now?

DownDetector showed 64,728 outage reports for Instagram at around 1:16 p.m. EST, which decreased to 24,143 by 2:16 p.m. EST.

Is the Threads app down right now?

DownDetector showed only 914 outages reported for Meta’s Threads app at 1:04 p.m. EST, which dropped to 159 at 2:19 p.m. EST.
