ISP investigating police shooting on border of Cass and Carroll Counties that left 1 dead

A Logansport man died early Tuesday morning after he was shot by a Cass County sheriff’s deputy.

At about 12:23 a.m., deputies from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call about a double stabbing in the 3000 block of West County Road 500 South at the edge of Carroll County.

Officers began rendering first aid to a victim upon arrival. One of the deputies went outside to grab more medical supplies from their car and saw Christopher S. Evans, 35, standing nearby with a knife in each hand.

Evans ran toward the deputy. The deputy retreated to a nearby field, shooting at Evans.

Evans was struck “at least once,” according to a news release from the Indiana State Police. He received first aid but was pronounced dead at the scene.

One of the stabbing victims remains in critical but stable condition, while the other is stable, an ISP spokesperson said. No law enforcement officers were injured in the incident.

The incident took place on a road that separates Cass and Carroll Counties. While the stabbing happened in Cass, the shooting took place just over the Carroll County line.

The deputy who fired the gun hasn’t yet been identified but has been placed on administrative leave as per procedure.

The Indiana State Police is leading the investigation with support from Carroll County’s coroner and prosecutor.
