JCPS on a two-hour delay Monday after winter snow storm closures

Jefferson County Public School students will finally return to class after a week of closures following two snow storms — but two hours later than a normal school day.

JCPS announced Sunday evening the district will operate on a two-hour delay Monday with teachers on a one-hour delay. Early Childhood classes are canceled, but employees should report to work.

An email from the district said, “Due to the condition of some side roads and sidewalks throughout the county, the delayed start times will allow students to be waiting at bus stops and walking to school in the daylight.”

Since Wednesday, Louisville snow crews have helped clear routes near JCPS bus stops. JCPS’ own snow team has also plowed and salted roads on school campuses during 12-hour shifts that continued through the weekend, spokesperson Carolyn Callahan previously said.

After five missed days, there is a chance the last day of school for students could now change.

Students already missed a day of school in September due to forecasted inclement weather. But rather than extending the school year, Jefferson County Board of Education members voted in December to forgive the day for students. Employees were set to make up the day of work the week of May 27.

The board must now decide if it will approve forgiving any of last week’s missed days, Callahan said.

The board’s next meeting is Tuesday, Jan. 26.
