JCPS, other districts close schools Friday due to snow. Here’s what we know

Jefferson County Public Schools announced campuses will be closed for the fifth straight day Friday as the city braces for another round of snow expected to move in during the morning hours.

The school district stated “icy side roads and anticipated snow” were the main reasons for the closure. All athletic events and other extracurricular activities are also canceled Friday.

JCPS students were set to return to classrooms Monday following the winter break, but the district has so far closed schools and canceled classes this week following a major winter storm that dumped more than 10 inches of snow in the area Sunday and Monday.

Jefferson County and surrounding counties are under a winter storm warning until 7 a.m. Saturday, the National Weather Service announced Thursday morning. Between 3-4 inches of snow are forecast for the Louisville metro area Friday, with higher amounts possible. Snow showers are expected to reach Louisville around 9 a.m. Friday and continue throughout the day.

Some public school districts neighboring Jefferson County have also announced school closures or nontraditional instruction (NTI) days for students Friday. Those districts include:

  • Oldham County Schools: NTI

  • Bullitt County Public Schools: NTI

  • Spencer County Public Schools: NTI

  • Shelby County Public Schools: Closed for a traditional snow day

  • Greater Clark County Schools: Closed for a traditional snow day

  • New Albany Floyd County Consolidated School Corporation: Closed for a traditional snow day

Officials from Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg’s office said Wednesday it had coordinated with JCPS to ensure busy bus stops were cleared of snow and ice, including stops outside of Metro Government’s snow routes. More than 40,000 JCPS students ride the bus to and from school.

“Metro Public Works is updating snow routes to include the remaining (bus) stops and coordinating with suburban cities on those within their boundaries,” Greenberg spokesperson Kevin Trager said in a statement.
